What Is Answer Engine Optimisation? How to Get Recommended by ChatGPT
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is how you get your business quoted and recommended by ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity. Here's what it is, why it matters, and a 10-step checklist.
Ask ChatGPT "who is the best B2B lead generation agency in India?" and it will give you a short list of names. Ask Google the same question and an AI summary appears above the normal results. If your business is not in those answers, many buyers will never see you.
Answer engine optimisation, or AEO, is the work of getting your business into those answers. This guide explains it in plain language, shows what we found when we tested real AI answers, and gives you a 10-step checklist.
What is answer engine optimisation?
An answer engine is a tool that answers a question directly instead of showing a list of links. ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and AI Mode, Perplexity, Microsoft Copilot and Gemini are all answer engines.
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) means making your business easy for these tools to find, understand, trust and quote. Think of it like this: traditional SEO tries to get your shop onto the right street. AEO tries to make sure that when someone asks a local guide for directions, the guide names your shop.
AEO vs SEO vs GEO
- SEO (search engine optimisation): helps your website rank in normal Google and Bing results.
- AEO (answer engine optimisation): helps your business appear in direct answers, such as AI summaries and featured answers.
- GEO (generative engine optimisation): another name, often used for the same idea, focused on AI tools that generate answers, like ChatGPT.
In practice they overlap heavily. Good SEO is still the foundation of AEO.
Why AEO matters in 2026
The way buyers search is changing fast:
- Google says its AI Overviews have more than 2 billion monthly users, according to CEO Sundar Pichai on the company's July 2025 earnings call.
- ChatGPT was reported at around 900 million weekly active users in February 2026.
- In 2024, Gartner predicted that traditional search engine volume would drop 25% by 2026 as people turn to AI chatbots and virtual agents.
For B2B companies this matters even more, because buyers do most of their research alone before they ever speak to a supplier. If an AI tool shortlists your competitors and not you, you may lose the deal before you knew it existed.
How AI tools decide which businesses to recommend
We tested this ourselves. In November 2026 we asked Google, Bing and ChatGPT six questions a buyer would ask, such as "best B2B lead generation agency in India" and "best lead generation company in Dubai", and recorded which companies appeared and which websites the answers relied on. Three patterns stood out:
- Google's AI Overview mostly quoted "top 10" list articles, many written by agencies that included themselves, plus agency directories.
- Bing's results were mostly agency directories with reviews, such as Clutch, GoodFirms, Sortlist and DesignRush.
- ChatGPT said it chose agencies based on B2B specialisation, published results, independent reviews and market fit, and it quoted Clutch review scores to support its picks.
In other words, AI tools recommend businesses that other trusted websites already talk about, and that publish clear proof. Your own website matters, but what others say about you matters just as much.
What Google officially says
Google's own guidance for its AI features says there are no extra technical requirements or special markup needed to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode. A page needs to be indexed and eligible to show in Google Search with a snippet. Google recommends the same basics as normal search: helpful, reliable, people-first content, a good page experience, structured data that matches what is visible on the page, and a site verified in Search Console.
The 10-step AEO checklist
1. Make sure search engines can read your site
Submit your sitemap in Google Search Console and Bing Webmaster Tools, and check that your robots.txt file doesn't block important pages. If Google can't index a page, no AI feature can use it.
2. Answer questions directly
Write headings as the questions buyers ask, then answer in the first one or two sentences. AI tools like short, clear answers they can quote.
3. Add FAQ sections
Put the five to ten most common buyer questions at the end of key pages and blog posts, each with a direct answer.
4. Publish proof with real numbers
Case studies with specific results ("260+ qualified leads in 45 days") give AI tools something concrete to cite. Vague claims get ignored.
5. Get listed on review directories
Create profiles on directories such as Clutch, GoodFirms, Sortlist and DesignRush, and ask happy clients to leave verified reviews. These sites appeared again and again in the AI answers we tested.
6. Get mentioned in other people's lists
Ask the authors of "best agencies" and "top companies" articles in your niche to consider you for their next update. AI answers lean heavily on these lists.
7. Publish your own honest comparison content
Write fair guides comparing options in your market, including competitors. This is exactly the kind of content AI tools quote.
8. Add structured data that matches your page
Structured data (also called schema) is hidden labelling that tells search engines "this is a company", "these are our services", "these are FAQs". Google says it must match the visible text on the page.
9. Keep your business details consistent everywhere
Use the same company name, description, location and services on your website, LinkedIn, Google Business Profile and directories, so AI tools can connect them as one business.
10. Re-check AI answers every month
Ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Copilot and Google the same buyer questions each month and note whether you appear. It's the simplest way to measure AEO progress.
Common AEO mistakes
- Writing only for keywords, not for questions. AI tools answer questions.
- Hiding answers deep in long paragraphs. Put the answer first.
- No third-party proof. If no other site mentions you, AI tools have little reason to recommend you.
- Buying fake reviews or listings. They can damage trust with platforms and buyers.
- Expecting overnight results. Directory profiles, reviews and list mentions usually take two to three months to show up in AI answers.

Frequently Asked Questions
1What is answer engine optimisation in simple words?
Answer engine optimisation (AEO) is the work of getting your business quoted and recommended when people ask questions in tools like ChatGPT, Google's AI Overviews and Perplexity, instead of only ranking in normal search results.
2Is AEO different from SEO?
They overlap. SEO helps you rank in search results; AEO helps you appear inside direct answers. Good SEO, such as an indexable site and helpful content, is the foundation of AEO, but AEO also depends heavily on what other trusted websites say about you.
3How do I get my business recommended by ChatGPT?
Publish clear answers and proof on your own site, get listed and reviewed on trusted directories, get mentioned in respected list articles in your niche, and keep your business details consistent everywhere. Then check ChatGPT's answers monthly to track progress.
4Do I need special code or schema for Google AI Overviews?
No. Google says there are no additional requirements or special schema needed for AI Overviews or AI Mode. Your page must be indexed and eligible to appear in Search with a snippet. Structured data helps only if it matches your visible content.
5How long does AEO take to work?
Technical fixes can take effect within weeks. Directory reviews, list mentions and content usually take two to three months before they show up in AI answers.
